U.S. Congressman French Hill
Dear Friends,

For the third consecutive year, the House of Representatives is hosting the Congressional STEM App Challenge to help foster the creativity and imagination of America's next generation of tech entrepreneurs.

Each Congressional District determines its own winner from high school students who submit an application to the Congressional App Challenge website.

Last year, over 1700 students nationwide competed in the challenge, representing 115 congressional districts, and creating 508 new apps. The Second Congressional District winner was Michael Davis for his app titled "Situational Awareness."

Arkansas was one of only three states with participants from every congressional district. Our state is becoming a leader in app technology, and I am looking forward to seeing the great ideas and finished products from our well-trained and bright students this year.

For this challenge, which focuses on the STEM areas - science, technology, engineering, and mathematics - contestants submit projects that can range from presenting an idea of how an app might work to creating a functioning app.

The winner of this competition for the Second Congressional District will be honored at a reception at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in November, and will then have his or her app displayed in the Capitol in Washington, D.C., for the coming year.

Many of our Arkansas students are learning computer coding, and this competition is a great way to stay engaged and active in this rapidly growing market.

When our young people have the skills to create and to complete, we all win.

Sincerely,

Representative French Hill

Veterans History Project Workshop

At 9 AM CT, on Saturday, October 8, 2016, Rep. Hill will host his second Veterans History Project Workshop on the 8th floor of 1501 N University, Little Rock, AR 72207. The Veterans History Project was started in 2000 and is overseen by the Library of Congress to preserve history by recruiting volunteers to interview veterans.

The workshop will train volunteers on how to interview veterans and submit the recordings of their stories to the Library of Congress. After the training workshop, staff will be able to connect volunteers with veterans to interview. Anyone interested in volunteering, or veterans interested in telling their stories should RSVP to Chloe Maxwell
(chloe.maxwell@mail.house.gov or (501) 324-5941).
Opportunities for Students and Educators

Rep. Hill hosts a series of events, programs, and opportunities for students and educators to recognize the talent and leadership of students in the Second Congressional District.

One of those opportunities is participating in a live online chat with the Congressman. All schools in the Second Congressional District are invited to participate in a live link-up via Google Hangout or Skype with Congressman Hill while he is in his Washington, D.C. office. These occur once or twice per month during the school year and are available by request.

Hill Grills Wells Fargo CEO on Fraud

Last week, the House Committee on Financial Services held an oversight hearing on Wells Fargo's activity in opening unauthorized customer accounts.

During the hearing, Rep. Hill said to John Stumpf, CEO, Wells Fargo: “This is hurting the ability of the banking industry to do consultative selling; something that we all pride ourselves on in financial services is that we seek to understand the needs of our customers and try to meet them, and this damage by what has happened at Wells Fargo is going to hurt that effort on behalf of community banks all over this country and cause sweep investigations of incentive sales programs, cross selling programs, or consultative selling, which is really what we’re talking about. But I hope that we will also ask our regulators where they were at this time. The OCC clearly had a ‘needs to improve’ rating for you in compliance and some intensive work you were doing over those two years, but  I have seen no evidence so far that the CFPB—which actually has the statutory obligation to be engaged here—was taking action.”
