U.S. Congressman French Hill
Dear Friends,

Last week, I traveled with with four of my colleagues to Russia and Poland. I wanted to hear first-hand from the Russians in Moscow their views on Syria, Ukraine, and the state of American-Russian relations. While in Warsaw, I listened to Polish assessments on these same issues from a European point of view. In both countries, we had the opportunity to engage with business leaders, students, media, academics, and elected officials.

A stronger Europe and a strong and effective NATO alliance are needed to protect and enhance our own security interests. On these critical issues and on the Global War on Terror, our government must remain fully engaged with our allies and the Russian government.

Unfortunately, the Russians have done little to reassure American leadership that they can be worthy partners of America and our great allies throughout Europe.

Without an agreement to develop a ceasefire on the Russo-Ukranian Border, the Russians will remain at arms with Ukraine. The Russians have also failed to acknowledge anything was done wrong in their invasions into Georgia in 2008 and, most recently, Crimea, and they openly blame the Ukrainians for that dispute.

The reality for all of us, including the Russians, is that we have a common foe in radical Islamic extremists. ISIS was responsible for the deaths of 217 people on board a Russian commercial aircraft last year, and they have killed many more across Europe, including attacks in the international cities of Paris and Brussels.

Our president knows that defeating this form of extremism will require a broad coalition compromised of not just American military personnel. While I am not optimistic Mr. Putin is willing to be a good partner of America, I urge the President to use the influence of the United States to make Russia better neighbors to our friends in Europe and allies in the Global War on Terror.

Sincerely,

Representative French Hill

The family of an Arkansan WWII machine gunner wounded more than 72 years ago received his posthumous Purple Heart on Friday after utilizing records from U.S. Rep. French Hill's office. Walter Corley of Prattsville was severely concussed after a shell exploded several feet from his machine gun position in Sicily on Aug. 12, 1943, according to a pamphlet read at Friday's ceremony.  Corley's friend and ammo bearer was killed in the blast, which sent Corley to the hospital for several weeks before he was discharged in 1944, the pamphlet said.

Community Empowerment Initiative

In 2015, Rep. Hill started a Community Empowerment Initiative (CEI) in central Arkansas to examine the best practices for helping all of our citizens achieve success. Last week, he held his fourth CEI roundtable discussion on the topics of education and mentoring with representatives from University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the Arkansas Community Foundation, the Little Rock School District, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Greenbrier School District.

Continuing on this important theme, Rep. Hill and fellow House Committee on Financial Services member Rep. Scott Tipton met with The Doe Fund founder Harriet McDonald in New York City earlier this week. The Doe Fund has transformed how New York City helps the homeless find dignity, work, and independence.

Following the visit, Rep. Hill stated: "Our work session with Harriet and her staff was invaluable and inspirational. Our discussions will guide our assessment of federal support to the poor and homeless in our communities."
