U.S. Congressman French Hill
Dear Friends,

When countries directly threaten our national security and weaken global stability, we take action.

This week, the House passed t
he Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act to implement sanctions on Russia, Iran, and North Korea for their aggressive actions.

As a member of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Terrorism and Illicit Finance, I was pleased that this bill includes important provisions that enhance the anti-terrorism tools at the Department of the Treasury. This legislation enshrines existing sanctions against Russia into law for its cyber attacks against the United States and other democracies. It also improves cooperation with our allies to counter Russian influence in our nation and in Europe.

In regard to President Putin's persistent efforts to meddle in our politics and of our friends in Europe, I helped craft and cosponsor legislation called the Fight Russian Corruption Act. This bill would establish an office of anti-corruption at the U.S. State Department to identify and address illicit Russian financial activities in Europe. This office would send a report to Congress on Russia's corrupted financial networks dealing with real estate, energy, and media and infrastructure sectors. It would also authorize foreign assistance to European countries to help combat Russia’s illegal activities, and would allow North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to assist with this effort.

These actions we're taking demonstrate that America is returning to serve as an engaged world leader that is against corruption, gross violations of human rights, support for terrorism, illegal testing of ballistic missiles, and invasion of neighboring countries.

The safety and security of Americans should always come first, and I'm working with my colleagues in Congress to counter the activities of nations that threaten America and our interests.

Sincerely,

Representative French Hill

Photos for the Week

I was delighted to learn that the MLK Commission led by DuShun Scarbrough was bringing a group of young Arkansans to Washington. It was great to meet these ambitious students. I'm really proud of the work that the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is doing to help our youth become strong leaders in our communities.

Also, congratulations to DuShun for earning the Next Generation Public Service “Silent Hero” Award. He has devoted his life to helping others and building them up for future success! We're blessed to have him serving in Little Rock.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta joined the member of the Arkansas Congressional delegation, Arkansas State Senator Jane English, Arkansas Chamber of Commerce President Randy Zook, and Arkansas Chamber of Commerce Director of Government Affairs Andrew Parker. We had a great conversation discussing the Arkansas State Chamber’s “Be Pro Be Proud” initiative, which aims to provide more opportunities for hardworking Arkansans and shrink the skills gap between our labor force and industry needs in Arkansas.

I'm proud of Ellie Mayberry, delegate to the 2017 American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation, for representing Arkansas. I enjoyed discussing the bill she proposed with Sydney Stewart to balance the budget for introduction to their Senate proceedings. She is a driven and committed young lady who has a bright and promising future ahead of her.
